Reporter Joey Flechas of the Miami Herald reports that there’s a new law in place in Miami that requires builders as of April 1st to either meet certain green building standards or pay a fee equal to 5 percent of the cost of construction for structures bigger than 7,000 square feet.  That translates into a big hunk of change.  Mr. Flechas states that the typical cost to build a new home in Miami-Dade is about $250 per square foot, so the 5 percent fee for a 7,000 square foot house would be $87,500.  Planning officials in South Florida are watching to see if the new ordinance gets the private and public sectors on the same sustainable growth page.  Read More in the Miami Herald >
