Green building in New Mexico took a big step in 2004 when then-Gov. Bill Richardson declared New Mexico the “Green Energy State” and organized the Green Building Task Force.  In 2007, the Sustainable Building Tax Credit was adopted, allowing all types of construction to take advantage of the tax credit, from affordable housing to schools to single family homes.

“The tax credit remains one of the nation’s best, helping spur green building in the state,” Patti Mason, regional director of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Mountain West Region, said.

Residential construction continues to take advantage of the tax credit, helping bring value to the housing market.
