Economists from the NAHB, Metrostudy, and the National Association of Realtors (NAR) are in agreement that 2018 will be a good year for the new-home and resale market, despite the ongoing burden of labor and lot shortages and rising material costs. Mortgage applications continued to increase over the last week even as interest rates rose to the highest level in nearly a year, according to the latest data from the Mortgage Bankers Association.
The latest Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey from the MBA, which covers the week ending Jan. 19, 2018, shows that mortgage applications increased 4.5% from last week.
Attractive monthly payments–a long-time lever based on low, low mortgage rates–start to get more daunting as interest rates inch upward.
Housing starts, completions, and permits all increased over 2016
The lack of affordable, buildable lots and the scarcity of labor affected home production in 2017. While starts increased by 9 percent over 2016, the characteristics of these new homes stayed largely the same, according to survey results from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) released yesterday during a press conference at the NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla.
