Employer Responsibilities to Protect Temporary Workers
To ensure that there is a clear understanding of each employer’s role in protecting employees, OSHA recommends that the temporary staffing agency and the host employer set out their respective responsibilities for compliance with applicable OSHA standards in their contract. Including such terms in a contract will ensure that each employer complies with all relevant regulatory requirements, thereby avoiding confusion as to the employer’s obligations. Read More

New Organization ramps up green building standards
The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) has created a joint venture with Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) to create Green Business Certification Inc. Canada, a new organization that will focus solely on project certification and professional credentialing of green buildings and businesses. The new program will be in charge of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, a building rating system for improving the efficiency of water and energy use in buildings.Read More
DC named first LEED “Platinum City” in the world – Washington, D.C.
D.C. already leads the nation for environmentally friendly green building construction per capita, and now it gets the highest citywide award for green building. The U.S. Green Building Council has named the D.C. as the first city in the world to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Cities Platinum award, the highest certification given by the U.S. Green Building Council. Hurricane Harvey’s Impact on Building Materials Demand Hurricane Harvey has set records for total rainfall and overall damage of residential housing and commercial buildings. Unfortunately, the total economic impact has yet to be realized but the total damage of Hurricane Harvey is estimated to fall between $70 and $108 billion. Rebuilding will take years, similar to other devastating storms such as Katrina, Sandy and Andrew. Read More

AD&C Finance Conditions Ease, But At A Slower Pace
Builders and developers responding to NAHB’s AD&C Financing Survey continue to report easing credit conditions for acquisitions, development, and single family construction loans. In the second quarter of 2017, the overall net tightening index based on the AD&C survey was -10.7, indicating net easing. All major categories of AD&C financing also record net easing, but land acquisition and single-family construction loans were comparatively easier than standards on land development loans. Read More

156,000 Jobs Added in August, 13,000 in Residential Construction
According to the Employment Situation for August 2017 reported by the BLS, total non-farm payroll employment increased by 156,000 in August, less than 189,000 gains in July. Employment growth has averaged 176,000 per month so far this year, compared with the average monthly growth of 187,000 in 2016. Read More
