MILLWORK SAFETY

Silica Rule Enforcement Begins
The occupational safety and Health Administration (OSHA) began enforcement of its final crystalline sillica standard on Saturday, September 23, 2017 after a three month delay.

The silica rule, which has been in the works since 2013, is intended to limit workers’ exposure to respirable crystalline silica. It reduces the permissible exposure limit (PEL) for workers to 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air, averaged over an eight-hour shift. It also requires employers to implement engineering controls, offer medical exams and develop control plans related to the issue. Read More

In the 20+ years since the U.S. Green Building Council first developed its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the nation’s LEED-certified construction volume has grown to comprise about 40% of green constructions’s contribution to the economy, according to the USGBC’s Leticia McCadden. HERS Rates Homes Hit 22%
Over the summer, the U.S. eclipsed 2 million HERS rated homes, with rated homes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. According to research done by the National Renewable Energy Labs, HERS rates homes made up 22% of all new homes in 2016. Read More
