Reporter Joey Flechas of the Miami Herald reports that there’s a new law in place in Miami that requires builders as of April 1st to either meet certain green building standards or pay a fee equal to 5 percent of the cost of construction for structures bigger than 7,000 square feet. That translates into a big hunk of change. Mr. Flechas states that the typical cost to build a new home in Miami-Dade is about $250 per square foot, so the 5 percent fee for a 7,000 square foot house would be $87,500.
