Some 600 changes introduced in the 2015 editions of the National Building, Fire and Plumbing Codes
Canadians now have access to the 2015 edition of Codes Canada- OTTAWA, June 28, 2016 /CNW/ – Canadians are demanding safer, healthier and more accessible construction where they live, work and play. To address these demands, some 600 changes were introduced in the National Model Construction Codes, now known as Codes Canada. The 2015 editions of the Codes respond to the changing needs of Canadians and to new technologies, materials, and research.

NFRC Bulletin: Fenestration Products and Manufactured Housing DOE Seeking Comments on Proposed Rule
The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) has been meeting with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to discuss the role of and impact that fenestration can have on a building’s energy efficiency and energy use. Among the topics discussed has been how fenestration products can impact manufactured housing. In a new Proposed Rule titled “Energy Conservation Standards for Manufactured Housing,” the DOE requests public comment, providing an opportunity for the fenestration industry to add their comments and concerns to the requirements being proposed.

Where the Top 10 Home Builders Rule the Roost
Builder and Metrostudy break down the U.S. metros where a few builders take the largest market share
We have said regularly that dealers who ignore production builders are missing out on a huge share of all construction taking place today. According to Metrostudy, a sister company to ProSales, the nation’s 100 biggest builders were responsible for 54% of all the new homes for which sales were closed last year.

Many Construction Workers Say Bosses Favor
Productivity Over Safety
A new survey from the National Safety Council shows that 60 percent of respondents in the construction industry believe safety takes a backseat to productivity at their companies. In manufacturing, 33 percent of the 2,000 employees surveyed across the nation believe that as well, which matches the U.S. average across all industries.

More Builders Report Labor/Subcontractor Shortages
A survey of single-family builders conducted by NAHB in June 2016 shows that shortages of labor and subcontractors have become more widespread than they were a year ago.
The survey consisted of special questions on labor and subcontractor availability that NAHB has periodically added to the instrument for the monthly NAHB/Well Fargo Housing Market Index. The questions have covered 9 key trades in a consistent way since 1996. Averaged across the 9 trades, the share of builders reporting either some or a serious shortage has skyrocketed from a low of 21 percent in 2012, to 46 percent in 2014, 52 percent in 2015, and now 56 percent in 2016.

Home Prices in April – Rising Moderately
Both FHFA and S&P/Case-Shiller home price indexes rose moderately in April.
S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the Case-Shiller (CS) National Home Price Index rose at a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 0.9% in April, slightly faster than the downwardly revised 0.7% in March. The Home Price Index from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) slowed to a 2.8% seasonally adjusted annual rate in April, down from 10.2% in March.

Despite Upward Revision, Slower Growth Trend Continues
The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported today that GDP, a broad measure of overall economic activity, rose by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.1% in the first quarter of 2016. Today’s release is the third and final estimate of GDP growth for the quarter.
