UFPI to Buy Custom Millwork Firm

(Sept. 7, 2016) Universal Forest Products, Inc. has signed a definitive agreement to purchase St. Louis, MO.-based idX Corp., an international provider of custom millwork and panel store fixtures.

The move opens new doors to Universal for growth in adjacent markets and with new products, and offers idX access to enhanced capacity and to new customers and markets. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the third quarter.

Concentration of Large Builders in Metropolitan Markets

NAHB analysis of information published in Builder Magazine shows that large builders gained market share on average each year from 2009 to 2014 in major metropolitan housing markets, before concentrations trended back somewhat in 2015. Figure 1 shows the annual average of the four statistics calculated for this analysis, and charts how these averages changed during the years following the recession.

Lack of builders holding back housing market

Housing Wire reports that U.S. desperately needs more construction workers, but former construction workers aren’t too eager to return to an industry that they say is untrustworthy, according to an article by David Randall for Reuters. After the housing crisis pulled 30% of construction workers out of the industry, the National Association of Homebuilders estimates that there are about 200,000 unfilled jobs in the industry today, according to the article.

Job Openings and Hiring Increase in Construction

The count for unfilled jobs in the overall construction sector rose in July, nearing the post-Great Recession high set in March. Residential construction hiring has also increased, after a period of soft gains in jobs.

Florida Building Commission Approves 6th Edition

September, 2016 – The Florida Building Commission’s code development cycle for the 6th Edition of the Florida Building Code is projected to take effect December 31, 2017.

World Millwork Alliance’s participation and advocacy efforts resulted in a positive outcome; whereby, strengthening and clarifying the Florida Building Code while balancing the needs of the door industry. The WMA 100 standard will be referenced in the state’s residential building code allowing door pre-hangers and manufacturers to use the WMA standard for structural performance requirements, as well as component substitution protocols.
