Housing Share of GDP: Housing Services Offsets Slight RFI Decline

With the release of the final estimates of second quarter 2016 GDP growth (revised up three-tenths to a 1.4% growth rate), housing’s share of gross domestic product (GDP) held steady at 15.7%. The home building and remodeling component—residential fixed investment—as a share of GDP declined slightly to 3.5%.

CaGBC Report Released Showing How Green Building Can Cut 19.4 Million Tons of GHG’s By 2030

The report, entitled Building Solutions to Climate Change: How Green Buildings Can Help Meet Canada’s 2030 Emissions Targets outlines the Canadian Green Building Council’s (CaGBC) response to the Vancouver Declaration on Clean Growth and Climate Change, which committed Canada to meeting or exceeding the government’s 2030 target of a 30 per cent reduction below 2005 levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The report makes four key recommendations for meeting Canada’s climate change targets while boosting the growth of Canada’s green building industry.  The recommendations are based on research from the WSP Group and Acton White Associates, who examined the carbon savings potential of existing buildings and net zero buildings, and who also analyzed investment requirements and economic benefits.  Read More in Sourceable >

Top Ten Things To Follow During OSHA Inspection

WMA media partner, DWM, reports this week that during a recent webinar on surviving an OSHA inspection, Keven Yarbrough of Yarbrough Safety Solutions and a former OSHA assistant area director, advised that when an inspector from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) visits your business there’s a list of ten tips you should follow: 1) know how to properly greet your compliance officer; 2) develop a plan of protection; 3) properly document the training you have provided; 4) know your construction safety standards; 5) know your rights; 6) make sure you collect the same evidence as collected by the inspector – “be a copycat;” 7) don’t argue with the inspector; 8) be aware that you’re always on the record, “so no idle chatter;” 9) be wary about signing anything; and 10)  make sure you give confident answers.  Read More in DWM >

National Home Prices Reaccelerated, Local Home Prices Varied in July

S&P Dow Jones Indices released the Case-Shiller (CS) National Home Price Index for July. The index rose at a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 5.0%, faster than the 2.1% in June. House prices have decelerated since the beginning of 2016 due to the sharp decline in existing home sales at the end of 2015. But, home prices started to accelerate in May and home price appreciation increased to 5.0% in July.
